Ukraine to begin first trial of Russian soldier accused of rape

In Ukraine, a preliminary hearing will be held in the case of a Russian soldier accused of raping a Ukrainian woman during the Russian-Ukrainian crisis.

According to a prosecutor's office spokesperson, the 32-year-old is suspected of killing a civilian in the Kyiv capital region on March 9 and then repeatedly raping the victim's wife. General Romanov won't be tried in person because he is not currently in Ukrainian custody.

Romanov and another Russian soldier are charged with raping a 33-year-old woman after killing her husband Oleksiy at close range in the village of Bohdanivka, northeast of Kiev.

According to court documents, the two soldiers allegedly fled after that and returned twice more to rape the woman.
At the time, nobody knew who the second soldier was.

What kind of legal representation Romanov would have at the trial, which will take place in secret, was not immediately clear.
Ukraine claims that thousands of war crimes may have been committed during the Russian invasion.
