NASU And SSANU Calls Off Prolonged Strike

After a brief meeting with the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, in Abuja, the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Allied and Education Institutions (NASU) suspended their strike actions on Saturday.

The suspension is set to take effect on Wednesday.

According to the education minister, the Federal Government has committed N50 billion to pay earned allowances to members of SSANU, NASU, and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Activities in public colleges are expected to be limited, though, while ASUU is still on strike.

ASUU, according to Minister Adamu, rejected the government's suggestion about the "no work, no pay" principle. Minister Adamu had made a suggestion on the suspension of the SSANU and NASU strikes on Thursday.

The ban will initially last for two months, according to a statement from the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of SSANU and NASU.

JAC spokesperson Peter Adeyemi signed the statement, which read, "The two months are to allow government implement the obligations negotiated."
